Southeastern Iowa Synod (ELCA)

Memorial Lutheran Church is a member of the Southeastern Iowa Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).  A brief summary of the work of the Synod is below. Visit the SE IA Synod web page to learn much more!

With eyes fixed on Jesus, we are the Southeastern Iowa Synod, one of the 65 synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. As a member of your congregation you are a part of the Southeastern Iowa Synod. You are joined with 95,000 other Christians in 150 congregations throughout central and southeastern Iowa.

Through the ministry of the synod, we

  • Help prepare pastors and other rostered leaders
  • Help congregations find and call leaders
  • Assist congregations struggling through times of financial hardship, conflict or transition
  • Celebrate with congregations as they mark significant milestones in ministry ...and we help one another.
  • For example we:
  • Encourage and join together in the study of Scripture.
  • Provide opportunities for youth and young adults to explore the heart of their faith formation
  • Form partnerships throughout the world, especially with Lutherans in the Pare Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania
  • Tell others, including seekers and immigrant communities about the healing and forgiving love of Jesus
  • Cooperate to alleviate hunger and to address the needs of Iowans living in poverty
  • Support agencies and institutions that serve the needs of others in and around the synod
